Our Class

Our Class 1

Welcome to Class 1. This is our Reception class at St Mary's. Mr John is the Class Teacher and Mrs Hands is the Class Teaching Assistant. Our first topic is Nursery Rhymes and Ourselves. We will be settling into the school routines and exploring the classroom.

In Reception we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.  The children develop their skills across 3 prime areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language,
  • Physical Development,
  • Personal, social and emotional development.

Children also develop skills in the following specific areas of learning:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics,
  • Understanding of the world,
  • Expressive arts and design.

Children are allowed to make choices and get the opportunity to direct their own learning.  This helps them to develop their learning characteristics in the following areas:

  • Playing and exploring,
  • Active learning,
  • Creating and thinking critically.
